By Carol Ryland

You can have one or more of these illnesses and not know it! Each of these syndromes have in common the following: the fact that symptoms can show up suddenly or slowly over time; they resemble and include symptoms of other illnesses simultaneously; no two cases are exactly alike; and they have remissions and flares... meaning episodes or time periods where symptoms don't show up, and episodes called flares when the symptoms seem to explode in intensity and require medical attention or even hospitalization.

All three illnesses, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and lupus, are considered to be autoimmune diseases, which means that the individual's immune system becomes misdirected and begins attacking healthy organs and tissues of the body. All three are still medical mysteries to at least some degree since there is no definitive cause that doctors can address, only theories and conjecture... so medical professionals focus on treating the symptoms and helping patients to cope. Hopefully in time, with all the resources being dedicated to the study and treatment of these diseases, we'll have more answers... and possibly an immunization or cure.

So How Do I Figure Out If I Have Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Or Lupusc

Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome are considered by many in the scientific and medical communities, including the Center for Disease Control (CDC), to be different manifestations of the same autoimmune disease. They are both suspected of having genetic and viral components. Sufferers with either or both illnesses frequently find themselves in a position where family, friends, co-workers, and even their own doctors don't believe that they are ill, because of the wide variety of strange symptoms and lack of definitive medical testing. Sufferers with either or both diseases usually end up seriously limiting physical activities, making lifestyle changes, and either modifying or changing jobs... if they don't end up quitting work altogether.

The similarity in symptoms of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome is remarkable: ongoing-extreme fatigue that doesn't get better with sleep or rest, widespread pain, muscle stiffness and weakness, cognitive and memory problems, mental fog, sleep disturbances, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, anxiety and panic attacks, mood swings, vertigo, endometriosis, migraines and headaches... just to name a few.

More unique to fibromyalgia are the intense painful points on the body called trigger points, unexplained vision changes and blind spots, dry eyes, and hypersensitivity to cold, sound, bright lights, odors, foods and medications. Chronic fatigue syndrome symptoms also feature chronic flu-like symptoms, chronic cough, sore throat, tender lymph nodes, nausea, earaches, irregular heartbeat, shortness-of-breath, frequent serious respiratory infections, rashes, seizures, and joint pain without redness or swelling.

Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome sufferers may go for months or even years with being diagnosed. Because of the wide variety of symptoms and the lack of blood tests for these syndromes, misdiagnosis is not uncommon. The symptoms themselves are, in many instances, distinct and separate illnesses that accompany the syndrome... for example, irritable bowel syndrome or endometriosis. In both cases, the sufferer is not only dealing with the extreme fatigue and pain, but the other symptoms that make it hard to function at all.

Lupus is another chronic condition in which there appears to be some similarity in symptoms: extreme fatigue, stiffness and swelling, joint pain, fever, chest pain, shortness-of-breath, skin lesions that become worse in the sun, a reddish butterfly-shaped rash on the face covering the cheeks and bridge of the nose, Raynaud's phenomenon (fingers and toes turn blue in cold or stressful situations), dry eyes, headaches, confusion and memory loss, and many other symptoms which vary widely from one person to another and change over time... overlapping with various other disorders.

This would make lupus as difficult to diagnose as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome if it weren't for the blood and urine tests to pin down this disease. The trick is to use the symptoms as a roadmap, identifying the most likely disease- culprit causing the symptoms. Then, getting tested to eliminate other illnesses. The process can take months, especially since the symptoms may be temporary or permanent, mild or severe, include one or more autoimmune diseases... you get the picture.

What Can I Do To Help Pin Down My Illnessc

1) Keep records of what works for you

2) Note changes in your health, medications, food allergies, activities

3) Get educated on your condition so you can help yourself

4) Contact a specialist in Rheumatology or other medical field specializing in treating these autoimmune diseases

5) Provide your specialist with the information you learn from your record-keeping

You are the first line of defense in the diagnosing and treatment of your illness. With your help, your specialist can provide you with the best options to manage your illness and reduce flares. New treatments and information are becoming available everyday which may eventually end the nightmare of living with these conditions for sufferers of fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and lupus.

One such treatment has been approved by the American Medical Association and CDC for the natural treatment of fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and lupus as well as other diseases. The key is improved health through improved nutritional supplements, which can go a long way to helping you control and even eliminate symptoms of these syndromes. As a fibromyalgia "survivor" myself, I have found nothing better for long-term remission of my symptoms than rebuilding my body from the inside out. Autoimmune diseases tear down the body at the cellular and tissue levels. The trick is to build a much stronger, healthier you.

The summer season brings a lot of hot days and many head to the beach to cool off. For others, the long drives to beaches does not is not practical, so the condo pool or local swimming pool works well. It's fun to go swimming with your family and friends especially if you are experiencing the scorching heat of ninety degree days.

There are some things to consider when you choose a swimming pool especially a public one. It's possible that you may contract certain skin complications or rashes from them. There are different kinds of rash. If you use a jacuzzi or hot tub you may get eruptions from there. Many health clubs and condo associations have both a jacuzzi as well as a pool for swimming. There are also chlorine rash or swimmer's itch. Normally, in order to maintain a clean jacuzzi or pool to swim in it's necessary to kill unwanted bacteria. Chlorine is applied to the pool water to maintain its safety. Some people are allergic to chlorine which can result in a red rash. Other people may get a rash due to overexposure but are fine otherwise. Chlorine rash is a form of chemical contact dermatitis.

You can also react to the bacteria called pseudomonas aeruginosa. This can be present in both pools and hot tubs. It can even be on the filters in pools and resist anti-bacterial agents. The effect of this bacteria can include pimples and blisters that resembles the effect of a chickenpox. There can also be fungus and other causes of rashes. The more crowded a pool or jacuzzi is, the possibility of the anti-bacterial agent breaking down increases. Also a further complication is when the elderly or young children accidentally have urination issues in water.

Here are some precautions to prevent rashes:

Moderation is the key. Do not overexpose your skin to the pools chlorine; let it have ample rest to breathe. If you know you are allergic to chlorine then you'll need to avoid the pool and head to the beach.

Shower with warm water before you take a dip on the pool, also shower after taking a dip on the pool.

Choose swimming pools that are regularly maintained or cleaned.

Another cause of rashes or swimmer's itch is from birds, mammals and even snails. Do be careful.

You can use over the counter corticosteroid creams, cool compresses, oatmeal baths, baking soda soaks, or various anti-itch lotions that are available without a prescription such as Aveeno or Calamine lotion to treat inflammation. Be sure to give your body a break from pools to let it heal.

Be safe and have fun, take care of your skin and enjoy the warm weather.

Lupus is a disease resulted when the body's antibodies start attacking one's own tissues. This then results into inflammation affecting blood cells, lungs, kidneys, heart and skin. Lupus in some cases can result into skin rash called lupus skin rash. Lupus can strike the persons from any age group but frequently women of childbearing years are it's pray. The severity of lupus skin rashes vary from person to person and can range from mild to disabling.

In lupus, the immune system of body gets skewed and body itself produces autoantibodies that attack the patient's own tissues. This whole phenomenon results in redness, pain and swelling in the affected parts of body. Systemic lupus erythematosus and discoid lupus erythematosus are the two types of lupus found in the patient's body.

Diagnosis of lupus is a difficult task and there are no certain specific symptoms that can lead to diagnose of lupus. All lupus patients respond positively to anti - nuclear antibody test that help in finding that whether the autoantibodies will react with cell nuclei or not.

There are some symptoms which when recognized, one can be sure of lupus. Patient usually encounters the difficulty or chest pain that is resulted by the inflammation of the lining of the chest cavity or heart. Arthritis is the other problem from which lupus patients generally suffer. These patients are very much sensitive and they develop red rashes as a result of exposure from sun. Blisters or rashes on mouth and nose are also formed in lupus patients. Kidney failure is the other serious result resulted from lupus.

It is advised that if lupus symptoms are diagnosed at an early stage, situation may be under control. One can follow some steps to prevent oneself from hazardous effects of disease. Anti malaria medication has proved useful in fighting against lupus skin rashes. It prevents the rashes from going into blisters that are far more dangerous than simple lupus rashes. Rest is an important factor in controlling the symptoms. One should take out some time to have some exercises and work outs as this helps in curbing the disease at early stage. One should avoid sun exposure to prevent the formation of any red rashes. Proper check up by doctor is very necessary as it helps in estimating the seriousness of disease. One should strictly follow the medication written by doctors to prevent him from getting the situation worse.

The term shingles is derived from the Latin and French words for belt or girdle, reflecting the distribution of the rash in usually a single broad band across one side of the body or body part. This band of pain and infection is only on one side of the body in the large majority of people and represents a dermatome, or origin of entry-- the area that a single sensory nerve supplies in the skin. The painful area may occupy part or all of the dermatome and the total distribution is notspecific to an area, but may blossom at the nerve endings of the dermatone and be a patch of infected nerve endings resulting in blisters. It is rare for shingles to affect more than one dermatone on one side of the body.

Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus the same virus that causes chickenpox. Anyone who's had chickenpox may develop shingles. After you recover from chickenpox, the virus can enter your nervous system and lie hidden for years. Eventually, it may reactivate and travel along nerve pathways to your skin producing shingles.

Varicella-zoster is part of a group of viruses called herpes viruses, which includes the viruses that cause cold sores and genital herpes. Because of this, shingles is also known as herpes zoster. But the virus that causes chickenpox and shingles is not the same virus responsible for cold sores or genital herpes, a sexually transmitted disease. A person with shingles can pass the varicella-zoster virus to anyone who hasn't had chickenpox. This usually occurs through direct contact with the open sores of the shingles rash. Once infected, the person will develop chickenpox, however, not shingles.

Under certain circumstances, such as emotional stress, immune deficiency (from AIDS or chemotherapy), or with cancer, the virus reactivates and causes shingles. In most cases of shingles, however, a cause for the reactivation of the virus is never found. Anyone who has ever had chickenpox is at risk for the development of shingles. Today there exists a vaccination for those who have had chickenpox that may prevent shingles.

Shingles is more common in older adults and in people who have weak immune systems. It has been estimated that up to 1,000,000 cases of shingles occur each year in the U.S.

Treatments for shingles:

There are several effective treatments for shingles however the first course of action involves medications. Drugs that fight viruses (antivirals), such as acyclovir (Zovirax), valacyclovir (Valtrex), or famciclovir (Famvir), can reduce the severity and duration of the rash if started early (within 72 hours of the appearance of the rash). In addition to antiviral medications, pain medications may be needed for symptom control. Both nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications and narcotic pain control medications may be used for pain management in shingles.

The diet may be supplemented with 1000 mgm. doses of L-Lysine and St. John's Wort has proven helpful. Nuts and pineapple should not be in the diet of anyone who has shingles.

Tens or interferential therapy can be applied to the affected area, but in most cases the pain from shingles is of short duration and tens therapy or interferential therapy is not indicated, unlike when the shingles pain persists and the patient has postherpetic neuralgia.

The affected area with shinglesshould be kept clean. Bathing is permitted, and the area can be cleansed with soap and water. Cool compresses and anti-itching lotions, such as calamine lotion, may also provide relief. Capsaicin cream (Zostrix), a derivative of hot chili peppers, can be used topically on the area after all the blisters have healed, to reduce the pain. Lidocaine pain patches (Lidoderm) applied directly to the skin can also be helpful in relieving nerve pains by numbing the nerves with local lidocaine anesthetic. These options should be discussed with your health-care professional.

What are shingles symptoms and signsc How long does shingles lastc

Before a rash is visible, the patient may notice several days to a week of burning pain and sensitive skin. When the characteristic rash is not yet apparent, it may be difficult to determine the cause of the often severe pain. Shingles rash starts as small blisters on a red base, with new blisters continuing to form for three to five days. The blisters follow the path of individual nerves that come out of the spinal cord in a specific "ray-like" distribution (called a dermatomal pattern) and appear in a band-like pattern on an area of skin. The entire path of the affected nerve may be involved, or there may be areas in the distribution of the nerve with blisters and areas without blisters. Generally, only one nerve level is involved. In a rare case, more than one nerve will be involved. Eventually, the blisters pop, and the area starts to ooze. The affected areas will then crust over and heal. The duration of the outbreak may take three to four weeks from start to finish. On occasion, the pain will be present but the blisters may never appear. This can be a very confusing cause of local pain.

What is postherpetic neuralgiac

The most common complication of shingles is postherpetic neuralgia. This occurs when the nerve pain associated with shingles persists beyond one month, even after the rash is gone. It is a result of irritation of the nerves of sensation by the virus. The pain can be severe and debilitating. Postherpetic neuralgia occurs primarily in people over the age of 50 and affects 10%-15% of people with shingles. There is evidence that treating shingles with antiviral agents can reduce the duration and occurrence of postherpetic neuralgia.

The pain associated with postherpetic neuralgia can be severe and long lasting. Wind, temperature changes, perspiration can all be painful for the patient suffering from postherpetic neuralgia. For postherpetic neuralgia interferential therapy is indicated. Tens therapy can also be used but only after it has been ascertained the carryover pain relief effect of interferenital is not substantial enough to warrant interferential on an as needed basis rather than constant wearing of a tens unit.

Treatment For postherpetic neuralgia pain:

Electrode placement for tens and interferential is the same for both. Interferential therapy requires longer, strip type electodes due to the higher current being delivered. Both tens and interferential are at home, as needed treatments that are self administered when possible. The dermatone that was affected by the shingles is the treatment path for electrotherapy. For sake of discussion, on any tens or interferential unit, there are two electrodes per channel, two channels per unit. Each channel has one electrode that emits electricity and the other electrode is the ground or where the electricity from the first electrode travels to to be absorbed. One electrode sends electricity and the other removes the electricity from the body. This allows the targeting of the electrical stimulus to a specific area, ie. the dermatone.

One electrode, from channel 1, is placed directly beside the origin point where the dermatone exits the spinal chord. The other electrode for channel 1 is placed about 2/3rds of the way down the dermatone. What this accomplishes is from the origin point to 2/3 rds down the affected dermatone there is electrical stimulus.

On channel 2 one electrode is placed between the two electrodes approximately 1/3rd down, and the other electrode from channel 2 is placed at the distal end of the dermatone, or the end of the area where the patient is experiencing pain. This electrode placement now covers the entire dermatone from point of insertion to the farthest point on innervation with an electrical chemical stimulus and also affects the sensory nerve endings to stop or severely reduce the severity of the pain.
With interferential therapy the postherpetic neuralgia patient should feel immediate pain relief and have an extended carryover pain relief extending from hours to days, or possibly a week. At the point that carryover, residual pain relief is reaching a week the probability of continued pain should be diminishing completely.

With all of the different joint supplements on the market these days, it can be difficult to understand what each one really is and what it does (or claims to do). This guide will help you get a basic understanding of what different supplements are and how they work. This list is by no means comprehensive, but it helps to provide a good stepping stone in beginning to figure out what product(s) might be right for you.

1. Glucosamine: Glucosamine is an amino acid that the body naturally produces. It is a precursor to a molecule used in the repair and formation of cartilage. The basic premise of treatment involving glucosamine is that oral consumption of the substance will increase the formation of new cartilage by way of providing more of the necessary building blocks. Scientific studies on whether or not Glucosamine is effective as a supplement have been inconclusive. Supplemental Glucosamine is typically derived from shellfish.

2. MSM: Methlsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a supplement that is believed to aid in the support of healthy ligaments. It occurs naturally in some primitive plants and is present in small amounts in many foods and beverages. MSM is promoted by many as a natural source of sulfur for the body, and the theory behind it is that the sulfur in it aids the body in maintaining healthy and flexible ligaments.

3. Chondroitin: Chondroitin is a molecule that occurs naturally in the body and is a major component of cartilage. It helps to keep cartilage healthy by absorbing fluid into the connective tissue. Chondroitin is also believed to help block enzymes that break down cartilage and to aid in the production of building blocks for the body to produce new cartilage. As with Glucosamine, there has been little in the way of scientific evidence to show that Chondroitin will yield measurable results when taken as a supplement.

4. Nutrient Based Joint Supplements: This new class of joint supplements for humans is based on the idea of encouraging the body to produce its own healthy joint tissue by providing a balance of valuable nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. One of the most well known products in this category is Greek Island Labs Natural Joint. These supplements can be a good alternative to Glucosamine and Chondroitin for those who are looking for a more natural approach and those who prefer products that are not animal based.

Now that you know a little bit more about the most popular supplements, you should be able to make an informed buying decision and select a product that will fit in with your lifestyle. Remember, the key to success with any product like this is consistency; you have to take it on a regular basis if you want to see positive results.

More than 90% of people with lupus have skin symptoms, and it was seen that these symptoms are more common in whites than in African Americans.

In those patients who have systemic lupus erythematosus there can appear many types of rashes, while the classic lupus rash is a redness on the cheeks.

A special characteristic rash is the one brought by discoid lupus, which manifests as red skin patches on the skin and scaliness and can lead to scarring. It often appears on the face and scalp and can lead to loss of scalp hair.

Hair loss can also occur because of the immunosuppressive medications, or with flares of systemic lupus erythematosus, even without skin rashes in the scalp.
An erythematous rash in a butterfly distribution on the face can show the presence of the acute cutaneous lupus erythematosus. Located in both cheeks and across the bridge of the nose, this blush is slightly edematous and appears usually after sun exposure, persists a few days and heals without scarring. It is known that there can appear erythematous lesions in other areas of the body too.

The subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus is dealing with localized or generalized lesions, may involve any part of the body and the erythematosus lesions may resemble a drug reaction as they involve palms and soles. The lesions are usually pruritic, and the maculopapular rash usually occurs after sun exposure. Most of the time, these lesions heal without scarring, but there exists the possibility that persistent lesions that become crusty to heal with only slight atrophy of the skin.
Chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus can appear anywhere, although usually it affects scalp and ears, and the rash may be pruritic. At the beginning, the lesions are erythematous, slightly elevated papules or plaques, in time they become raised, bright red, edematous, then the center becomes depressed, the colour fades and becomes atrophic, and the edematous red periphery slowly enlarges and becomes irregular with some telangiectasias. We must also mention that there are follicular plugging characterized by small round areas of hyperkeratosis in older lesions. It was seen that usually, these lesions heal with scarring and hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation.

If the lesions that are involving the scalp are erythematous and scaly, the hair usually grows back, but if the lesion heals with scarring the hair loss is permanent.
Lupus Panniculitis, appears as deep nodules, shows lesions situated below the skin in the subcutaneous tissue, and it is known to heal with a deep atrophy of the involved area.

Neonatal Lupus is seen in newborn babies, develops rash similar to the annularpolycyclic rash seen in subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus, and the bullous lupus erythematosus develops blisters which contain a clear seurous fluid, and may range from 3 to 40mm in diameter, the lesion resolving spontaneously usually without a scar after a week, but reappearing periodically.

FDA advisory panel approves new drug for lupus, Benlysta A Food and Drug Administration advisory panel recently voted 13-2 to recommend approval of Benlysta, the first new drug to treat lupus in more than half a century. The FDA has set Dec. 9 as the date to make a final decision on the drug. It doesn't have to follow the advice of its advisory panels, but it generally does.

Benlysta is not a wonder drug that will provide relief to everybody with the debilitating disease, but it may provide benefits for some and allow them to taper off existing drugs, which have powerful side effects that some think are nearly as bad as the disease itself. Systemic lupus erythematosus, commonly known as SLE or simply lupus, is a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs when the body's immune system attacks its own tissues and organs. As many as 90% of patients are women, usually in their 30s and 40s when it first strikes. No two cases of lupus are identical, but symptoms can include fatigue, fever, joint pain, stiffness and swelling, rashes, skin lesions, mouth sores, hair loss and chest pain. The disease can attack many internal organs, leading eventually to death.

Only three drugs are currently approved for treating lupus: aspirin, the steroid prednisone and the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine, all approved during the Eisenhower administration. All can have severe side effects. Other drugs, including the anti-rejection drugs cyclophosphamide and azathioprene, are sometimes used off label, but they can have even more serious side effects.

Benlysta is a monoclonal antibody known generically as belimumab. It was developed by Human Genome Sciences Inc. of Rockville, Md. and is being tested jointly by that company and GlaxoSmithKline. Studies released last year indicated that the drug helped about 30% of those who took it. For some reason, however, the drug does not appear to benefit African Americans, who are more susceptible to the disease than whites.

If the FDA approves Benlysta next month, it could be available early next year. The main drawback is expected to be cost. While the companies have not revealed what they expect to charge for the drug, other monoclonal antibodies on the market sell for thousands of dollars per dose.

Opiates are often referred to as narcotics and have been used medically to relieve pain for centuries. In the early 19th century, pure morphine extract was suitable for solution, and with the advent of the hypodermic needle in the mid-19th century, injection of morphine became a common method of pain relief. In 1898, heroin was introduced into the medical community as a remedy for addiction to morphine. However, it was soon revealed that heroin was even more likely to produce addiction than morphine. While opiates began their start in the medical community, they have quickly become one of the most commonly abused drug groups. Today, only codeine and morphine are still used in the clinical setting for pain management. The opiates drug group includes opium, morphine, codeine and heroin, among other synthetic opiates such as Demerol.

Short-term and Long-term Effects of Opiates

Opiates can cause serious health complications, such as fatal overdose, spontaneous abortion, and infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and hepatitis, particularly in users who inject opiates.

Opiates have short-term effects that appear quite soon after a dose and last a few hours. After injection of opiates, the user typically reports feeling a rush of euphoria, an increase in body temperature, dry mouth, and a heavy feeling in their limbs. The user then spends the next few hours alternating from a wakeful to a drowsy state until the drug wears off.
Regular use of opiates leads to a buildup of a user's tolerance. This means that the user must increase their subsequent dose of opiates to achieve the same effect as before. As the user increases their dose over time, they develop physical dependency and addiction. Their body has acclimated to the drug use, and has grown to depend on the presence of drugs in order to function properly. If an opiate user stops the intake of that drug, uncomfortable and even dangerous withdrawal symptoms may occur. Death from a opiate overdoese often occurs when a user who has been off opiates for some time resumes taking the same amount of drug they are used to. Because the body's tolerance has decreased during this time off period, the resulting effect is a drug overdose.

After repeated opiate use over a long peroid of time, long term side effects will begin to appear. Addicts who have been using for a long peroid of time often ignore their health because the only thing that matters is getting more of that drug. This self neglect can take the form of not eating and ignoring personal hygiene, which makes the user more susceptible to disease. Longtime users may develop collapsed veins, infections in their heart and valves, and liver disease. Because opiates depress respiration, pulmonary complications, such as pneumonia, may occur in longtime users due to respiratory depression and the poor health of the drug user.

Opiate Withdrawal

Opiate withdrawal can be incredibly painful, and in some case very dangerous. Withdrawal symptoms may occur as soon as a few hours after the last dose in users who have been regularly abusing opiates. Withdrawal symptoms include intense cravings for opiates, restlessness, body pain, insomnia, diarrhea, vomiting, and cold flashes among other symptoms. In longtime, heavy users who are in poor health, withdrawal can occasionally be fatal. Withdrawal symptoms for most users typically subside within a week.

When 15 year-old Molly began losing weight, her parents were worried. They suspected her new early lunch period in school was the culprit, but they took her to a doctor to be sure. After about a year of testing, Molly was finally diagnosed with celiac disease, an autoimmune digestive disease that affects about three million Americans. People with the disease cannot consume gluten, a protein found in most grains, cereals, and breads.

"The gluten triggers an immune response so that your body attacks itself and the little hairs on the intestine get blunted so that you can't absorb your nutrients," explains Molly's mother Jennifer North, who is now Vice President of the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness. Essentially, the body attacks itself every time a person with celiac consumes gluten. People with celiac disease must adhere to a strict gluten-free diet.

Throughout my career, I have taught many children with food allergies. Some have been allergic to peanuts, but our school is now a peanut and tree nut-free environment, so we no longer have to worry about that. Others have had dairy allergies, and one little girl, sadly, couldn't eat anything at all. Lately, we are seeing more celiac disease.

One of my students, Rachel, had a failure to thrive between ages one and two, gaining no weight and having skin that appeared practically translucent. Doctors knew something was wrong, but it took many tests to finally conclude she had celiac disease. Since the snacks we serve in school are typically crackers, cookies, and pretzels, Rachel could not eat what we served the other children. Her mother provided a basket of snacks specifically for Rachel. They were similar to what the other children ate, but were all gluten-free.

Even at three, Rachel knew that she had to eat her own snacks, and if someone mistakenly put something in front of her that she couldn't have, she was able to say that she couldn't eat it. When Rachel was diagnosed, her doctor pointed out that the disease is genetic, soif Rachel had it, one of her parents must have it also. After testing, it turned out that it was her dad. He only recognized his symptoms in hindsight.

"I knew that if I ate certain foods I didn't feel good, so I stopped eating those foods," he explains. "I would eat breakfast when I was in grammar school and I would never feel good after breakfast. So, I stopped eating breakfast."

Though he wasn't diagnosed until he was 41, he likely had the disease for much of his life. That's the word the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness is trying to get out. "Celiac has over 300 symptoms, so there really isn't a typical profile," points out North. "It can onset at any age."

As many as 90 percent of people with celiac disease do not even know they have it. Symptoms range from stomach aches and headaches, to bowel issues and discolored teeth. It can also trigger other autoimmune diseases such as thyroid disease or lupus, and even infertility and migraines.

Now that father and daughter are on a strict gluten-free diet, they are both feeling better than ever. Several area stores carry gluten-free foods, and more restaurants than ever offer gluten-free entrees.

People with celiac must be very careful. Gluten is an invisible ingredient, so if a food were contaminated with it, it would be impossible to see it. When Rachel's father has eaten gluten by mistake, he says he feels like he has the flu for about a month.

North urges people to speak with their doctor and be tested before going on a gluten-free diet on their own. For more information visit www.celiaccentral.org. If your child has any food allergy, be sure to educate her teachers about her disease, what her restrictions are, and how they can best suit her needs seamlessly in the classroom. She shouldn't be made to feel badly because of this difference from the other students. Also put a large sign in a place that is easily seen by all, which points out the child's name, picture and allergy. That will ensure that a substitute teacher or parent helping out, won't mistakenly give the child something she can't have.

A sebaceous cyst is a closed sac under the skin filled with a cheese-like or oily substance. It most often arises from swollen hair follicles and skin trauma. In most cases, it can be easily diagnosed by just examining your skin. However, a biopsy is advisable in order to rule out potential complications. In reality, sebaceous cysts are not dangerous, and if not severe, you do not need to undergo medical treatment. Usually you do not even particularly have to worry about them. They can clear up on their own. But if they become infected, natural sebaceous cyst treatment(http://www.mitamins.com/disease/Sebaceous-Cyst.html) has been statistically shown to be just as effective as traditional medical treatment.

Sebaceous cysts are often found on the face, neck, scalp or back. They are usually slow-growing, painless, freely-movable lumps beneath the skin. Are you wondering what causes sebaceous cysts(http://www.mitamins.com/disease/Sebaceous-Cyst.html)c Well, our skin has literally millions of sweat glands which become blocked extremely easily, and such blocking can cause these cysts. Occasionally, a cyst will become inflamed. Many cases of sebaceous cysts do not require medical attention; they can disappear on their own or stay the same size without causing other problems. But if the cyst becomes bigger or infected, it is necessary for you to see a doctor.
If you have a small inflamed cyst, your doctor may inject it with a steroid medicine that reduces swelling. Removal of the cysts or prescription treatment can also control this condition. If removal is not complete, the cyst may recur. Ugly-looking or infected sebaceous cysts need to be surgically removed or they may become painful abscesses. Surgery ensures that no re-occurrence takes place. There is another method which involves a smaller incision into the sac, manual expression of the sebum, and removal of the empty sac using forceps and scissors. In this way, however, people have a higher risk of inflammation.

Never touch it!

Although a sebaceous cyst is not a kind of serious disease, it can get infected easily. Never touch it or squeeze it to remove the inside substance, or you may cause swelling, pain, or infection. Once it the cyst becomes infected, treatment is imperative. An infection of a sebaceous cyst shows itself in various ways, including redness, tenderness, increased temperature of the skin over the bumps or lumps, as well as a grayish-white, cheesy, foul-smelling material draining from the bump or lump.

This natural sebaceous cyst treatment(http://www.mitamins.com/disease/Sebaceous-Cyst.html) is targeted at building the body's natural clearance and preventative processes which work against sebaceous cysts. The natural treatment targeting sebaceous cysts includes all essential natural ingredients, for example, vitamin A, which is essential for new skin and wound healing, and garlic, which is used to enhance immunity to bacterial infections. Other ingredients, such as cloxacillin and erythromycin, are also included.
