I have Lupus and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on helping dry skin?
I have been living with Lupus for about a year now and have episodes where my face gets very dry, flaky and sometimes itchy (butterfly rash). The skin around my eyes and my eyelids get very dry. The skin turns a deep shade red/purple and sometimes is painful to the touch. I also get dry patches on my forehead and chin. Does anyone have non prescription remedies to make my episodes subside easier?
This is something that you really must talk with
your doctor about. Its important that he or she
know this. It may be a side effect of medication
you are now taking. And furthermore, before you self
medicate, you need to find out it it will interact in a
negative way with your current medications.
If i had lupus the rash would ‘nt go away with skin lotion(moisturizer) would it and i would have more symptom
dont people with lupus have more than one symptom? i sometimes have a sore elbow, but my job involves heavy lifting repetetive all day and i have a history of tendenittis.I dont have a fever,i’am not fatiuged ,but i do suffer from anxitey
You are quite focused on lupus. Everyone is different, so if you had lupus, you may not have the same ailments as another person.
Weird eczema like rash around eyes, eyelids (lower and upper) and mouth.testing for lupus.Anyone?
I went to urgent care tonight. It started when I moved two weeks ago and just gets worse. It feels like I am dry, cracked, burnt and hivey all at the same time. The Dr put me on a steroid pack then tested me for immune disorders (I have Fibromyalgia). I looked up lupus rash and it doesn’t look the same. Any ideas? I am in pain and feel ugly..
How long does it take a lupus rash to heal?
There are many types of lupus rashes. How long it take to heal depends on the kind of rash, topical treatments (what you rub on it), and whether or not you are taking medication like prednisone or plaquenil. No one can answer that question for you without a lot more information, and even then it is varies from person to person. You can see the variety of lupus rashes at the link provided.
What should I do to reduce lupus rash flare?
I think I’m having my first lupus flare. A low bumpy rash has developed over the last few days on my back. Many teeny bumps, not red. Have to wait until morning to try to get appointment with Doc. Is there anything I can do in the meantime?
Over the counter cortisone cream. Benadryl. Stay out of the sun. Good luck.

How long does a lupus butterfly rash last?
I’m currently being tested for lupus (blood work) and I’ve already been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I’m wondering how long the butterfly rash last because I have had similar rashes, but they appeared to me to look more like too much sun (not scaly) than a rash and they would disappear a day or two later. It just appeared to be a sunburn on my cheeks and nose, even if I wasn’t out in the sun too long. Does this sound like a malar rash? I can’t seem to find too many pictures on here. Thank you!
If you are one of the people who gets the butterfly rash, and not all of us do, it will come and go. It’s very individual, so no one can answer that question.
If you want to see the wide variety of lupus rashes, type “google images” into your search bar then type “lupus rash” and you will get tons of pictures.
The malar rash typically does not occur in the fold that runs from the nostrils down to the corner of the mouth.
Many patients have lupus and fibro in overlap. (Just went to a conference on that today.)
Good luck with your hunt for a diagnosis.
hi ther dose anyone know can you get rashes on other parts of body with lupus ?
Yes, you can. I have systemic lupus, not discoid lupus. I do not have the “butterfly” rash, but have had other weird lupus skin issues. For example, when having a painful flare-up, for some reason my lower legs around my ankles turn bright red. It’s not an itchy, raised rash — it looks like a sunburn. I also get a rash on my chest, which looks like a scarlet fever rash, kinda. Sometimes I will get a red, kind of scattered rash on the tops of my forearms. But everyone is different…. those are just the ones that I have that I have been told by my rheumy doc are related to my lupus flare-ups. Good luck.
Please Help Me! I’ve Had An Itchy Rash That Has Lasted Four Months. Lupus Rash?
I’ve had a rash that started on my upper back that appeared after tanning one night. I’ve tanned before and never had this happen so I didn’t think it could be the tanning bed. Well I continued to tan and the rash begin to spread to my chest and then down my arms and on top of my hands. Then it spread over my cheekbones and over the bridge of my nose. It only appears in sun exposed areas. It’s stings, and itches and feels like it has a fever. It’s dry, scaly and shiny looking. I’ve spoken to several doctors and they all blame the tanning bed even though it’s been several weeks since I’ve been in one. When I get into the sun or around heat it seems to flare up more. From the pictures I’ve seen on the internet it resembles the lupus rash, especially the one on my face. I’ve had almost every symptom of lupus with other problems I’ve had but it seems like lupus rashes are not itchy nor do they have fever like mine. I’m a white female and I’m 28 years old. I’m also starting to see white spots all over my skin where the rash is present, like sun spots. I’ve tried-benadryl, hydrocortisone, bactriban, neosporin, nystatin, and various other anti-histammines etc. nothing relieves the itch or burn. This is driving me mad and becoming very bothersome. If anyone could please help me I would appreciate dearly. Thanks

Lupus Rash or other type of rash?
Is there any other condition that causes a rash around the sides of the nose?
I had this during the summer, it would get worse when i was outside in the sun, one day when I went to the pool it was really really noticeable. I always have a redness around the nose, I have seen pictures of the butterfly rash from Lupus and it seems so similar, I do have other symptoms like joint pain (was told I had arthritis as a child but couldn’t see another doctor about it), I do have fatigue but I thought maybe its because I’m underweight from losing weight when I found out I had Celiac (an autoimmune disorder)
The only way to know for sure is to see a Rheumatologist to confirm. They will look at your rash and run blood work such as an ANA, (anti-nucleur antibody) if it is a high positive, you have a very good chance of having Lupus. Rosasia (sp?) can look similiar which is just an adult form of acne. Even somebody very fair and sensitive to sun may get a rash. So see the Rheumie and GOOD LUCK!!
I need a concealar for my scars left from the lupus rashes – nothing seems to cover it, I tried everything
?
You need to check into Dermablend or Dermacolor corrective makeup, a highly pigmented camouflage cream.
this was shown on Oprah, some years back and it really works.
Is Lupus disease caused by AIDS or HIV?
im wondering because my friend has Lupus and her boyfriend is known to sleep with alot of people and I was wondering if lupus develops when you have aids or hiv. And is lupus like purple rashes on your skin?
Yes, lupus can cause purple rashes on your skin. No, lupus is not at all related to HIV.
Can a malar rash in lupus only appear at night?
Itching remedies for cutaneous lupus?
I’ve got photosensitive cutaneous lupus and I break out in itchy hives and rashes all the time, even though I take my plaquenil and steroids and put on sunscreen. Does anyone know of any good products I can get from the drugstore or home remedies I can try to curb the itching? It’s really torturous!
Is it possible for the Lupus rash to be more prominent on the nose and less noticeable on the cheeks.?
I have several of the Lupus symptoms, however, the rash is more noticeable on my nose. I don’t normally run a fever. My temperature usually runs below the normal 98.6–averaging about 96.5 to 97.5. The days that I feel really run down are the days when my temp jumps up, and then it is about 99.9. Can someone please give me a little more information on Lupus SLE?
Lupus patients sometimes have temperature ‘spikes’ when their temperature fluctuates a bit – usually when they have a lupus flare (when lupus is active), ‘night sweats’ are very common too.
The rash is, like most of the lupus symptoms, different in all patients and not that many actually get the classic ‘butterfly rash’. So some may get it mostly on the cheeks and some mostly on the nose.
There’s lots more info on our website http://www.lupus.org.uk and there’s also a ‘nurse online’ there who can answer any future questions or concerns you have.
Hope that helps.
why is the butterfly rash in systemic lupus erythematosus was called such?
other than being shaped like a butterfly, are there any other mechanisms on why this butterfly-like appearance or rashes becomes visible on the affected patients? I hope you could help me. thanks!
Only 30% of patients with lupus have a butterfly rash.
Since Lupus is a system disease, meaning inside. Lupus can affect kidneys, joints, blood etc. As eczema it’s an autoimmune disease.
I know I’m off topic….
The butterfly rash will get worse with sunlight as most lupus patients are photosensitive, like having sensitive skin, it’ll act like a sunburn.
It’s an anti-inflammatory action of the body.
Skin rashes, joint pain, fatigue, hair loss…could I have Lupus?
The skin rashes have been pretty much consistant over the past couple of years, and I have tried everything to see if it is allergic reaction, but cannot figure out any allergy. the red circular patches are raised and itch terribly, causing me to scratch until I bleed. My wrists and hands hurt daily, and my haior falls out in great gobs. I am always tired, which is difficult becaus ei have two small children and I am afraid that it is Lupus..but I have no insurance, therefor cannot go get tests done, or even ask my doctor…any advice?
You are definitely manifesting symptoms of lupus but of course lupus mimics lots of other illnesses. Please take a look at our website http://www.lupus.org.uk where there is a free nurseonline service. You could send her a list of your symptoms (make sure you tell her everything) and she could say if she thinks it might be lupus. It is obviously not possible to diagnose lupus without a doctor seeing you and carrying out the correct tests.
I would strongly advise you to seek medical help, if it is lupus it must be treated as soon as possible. Even if it isn’t lupus you have something wrong that needs to be investigated. Please DO NOT leave this untreated, you MUST seek medical advice. Whichever country you are in please see if there is a doctor that will see you.
How can I tell the difference between Fifth disease and Lupus?
I have red blotches on my face, some minor rashes and i had a few ulcers last week, I just recently developed the blotches.
My parents think I might have lupus.
I have never been so scared in my life.
How do you recognise a lupus rash? I know butterfly pattern but more detail please?
Is it dry? raised? fine dots? Does it react to creams etc?
Although it only affects about one in three people with lupus, the skin problem most often associated with the disease is a butterfly-shaped rash (malar rash) that develops across the cheeks and bridge of the nose. A malar rash may be flat or raised and may be blotchy or completely red in the affected areas. Some people with lupus develop skin lesions (subacute cutaneous lesions) that initially resemble small pimples but that eventually turn scaly and itchy, whereas others have large, flat, itchy lesions with clear centers. Both types of lesions usually appear after exposure to sunlight. Still other people develop a crusty, red, raised rash (discoid rash) on the face, neck, chest or scalp. A discoid rash is usually thick and scaly, may last for days or years, and often leaves hypopigmented or hyperpigmented scars. This rash is the only symptom in people with the discoid form of lupus. In a small percentage of cases, people with discoid lupus may go on to develop a mild version of SLE.
Does anyone have discoid lupus and is pregnant? What are your symptoms? How do you deal with them?
I am about 9 weeks pregnant and I cannot take my medication to help prevent the rash. Every day about 2 hours after I wake up I get a flare up on my hands, arms, legs, ankels, neck and chest and they seeming to get worse. Is this normal? I can’t get into my dermatologist for 2 weeks and none of my other doctors will touch the lupus issue. HELP!
Call the dermatologist back and be very firm about getting in earlier. If they gatekeepers still refuse, ask to have the doctor call you that day. If that does not work, call your rheumatologist.
Personally, I would look for another dermatologist ASAP. Lupus patients need to be able to see their doctors within a reasonable time when there is a problem Two weeks is not reasonable. It is most likely the receptionist who is the obstacle. Asking the doctor to call you should by pass him or her. Don’t bother telling her your whole story. You can also fax the doctor explaining your symptoms clearly and asking him or her to call you ASAP. You can also call after hours and get the doctor’s service and leave a message with them if you think your other approaches are not getting through to the doctor.
You might also call your ob/gyn and ask if over the counter cortison cream is permissible during pregnancy. Throughout your pregnancy the doctors who treat your lupus and your obstretician should be working hand in hand. You will be the one who has to make that happen.
Can cystic acne come with having Lupus?
My doctor thinks I might have Lupus because I have some of the symptoms
but I looked up Lupus and it doesn’t mention Acne only skin rashes I thought maybe it didn’t mention acne because it’s not that common with Lupus. Does anyone know someone with Lupus and are they getting Cystic acne form it?
There are a few forms of lupus, one effecting the skin is called discord lupus. You might want to look this up rather than lupus in general. Acne is not a symptom of lupus so you must have other issues as well for your Doctor to be considering this as a possibility.
Are a Lupus rash and Eczema linked to one another?
My grandmother passed away in 2001, primarily due to Lupus. I’ve been worried that I may have/get Lupus (since it is a genetically transmitted disease). I have common flare ups of a rash that i thought was eczema, but recently have thought could be related to Lupus. Could Lupus cause Eczema? Are they linked somehow?
Thanks!
Lupus is not genetically transmitted. You MAY inherit a genetic predisposition to lupus, but it requires triggers to develop the disease. There are many cases of genetically identical twins where one develops lupus and the other does not.
Lupus is an autoimmune disease where your immune system attacks your own health tissue. The exact cause is unknown.
The exact cause of eczema is unknown, but it’s thought to be linked to an overactive response by the body’s immune system to unknown triggers.
Lupus of the skin is diagnosed by skin biopsy. Eczema may require some allergy testing.
In addition, eczema is commonly found in families with a history of other allergies or asthma.
Some people may suffer “flare-ups” of the itchy rash in response to certain substances or conditions.
See a dermatologist.
I have a friend she has lupus, she is having itchy rashes, lower back pain, swellen of the joints trouble?
sleeping. She is on about 14 medications daily. She was very sick last year and I am just scared she runs back and forth to this and that doctor to no avail. They are constantly perscribing meds, and she is taken pain meds on a daily and now she is even on a sleeping medication. and of course they have perscribe an anti-depressant.
Yesterday she went to the ER and she was admitted? Please help serious responses please she is in her late 30′s??
Is the butterfly rash from lupus always on both sides of the face?
Or is it ever just on one side? Thanks
It usually goes across both sides, almost like a pair of sunglasses which have slipped right down your nose.
Unusually, I believe, I get the butterfly rash but I have discoid not systemic lupus.
Is it hard to diagnose Lupus in a teen with no positive labs?
There’s a strong family history and symptoms (including butterfly rash) that have lasted almost 4 months. Rheumy says he ruled out Lupus.
Can you have lupus without the rash?
I have every symptom of lupus but the rash. Like every symptom down to the protein in the urine. Is it possible to have lupus without the “butterfly rash”? Please no answers like “you should see a doctor”. Obviously, I have explored all the obvious options for an answer to this question. Please no obvious crap.
Yes! Lupus takes may different forms which makes it hard to diagnosis. My friend’s Lupus expressed itself by the swelling of limp nods in her arm pits that made her arm and had swell up like a balloon. She is also constantly having joint pain and is always exhausted. It many different forms. I have seen that some sort of rash does present itself eventually.
Does all lupus effect your skin?
I know there are many different types of lupus, but when I research it skin rashes are discussed a lot. I was wondering if there was a type that didn’t effect your skin. If so, Which type is it? Thankyou.
There are four types of lupus.
1. Neonatal lupus affects newborns of mothers who have lupus. If often clears on its own in about 6 months or so. In some cases the child may have congenital heart block which does not resolve itself.
2. Drug induced lupus is caused by certain medications, notably those for high blood pressure or tuberculosis. It goes away when the drug is withdrawn.
3. Cutaneous or discoid lupus affects the skin.
4. Systemic lupus erythematosus affects the body internally (joints, organs, and/or nervous system).
Some people who have cutaneous lupus develop systemic lupus. Some people who have systemic lupus develop cutaneous lupus.
What is the best treatment for Lupus Rash?
My Dr. keeps prescribing different medications, mostly steroid creams for my rash I get from Lupus. None of them seem to work long term, though they all seem to work at first. What is the best medication?
try going to the docter if you ask god about it you will be just fine and remember you are in my prayers
Definitely get it looked at with the thought of its being PLEVA (your dermatologist will know what that means)
