      Kegel Exercise
      The Kegel Exercise, named after Dr. Arnold Kegel, is an exercise of the pubococcygeal muscles. This exercised is the regular contracting and relaxing of the pelvic floor muscle designed to restore muscle tone, reduce overactive bladder symptom, and to increase sexual gradification. This exercise has been shown to be of benefit to both men and women in the treatment of urinary incontinence.

      Dr. Kegel, the Assistant Professor of Gynecology at the University of Southern California School of Medicine, popularized this exercise in the 1948 in the United States. However several of the ancient cultures developed several different exercises for the same muscles to improve health, longevity, spiritual development and sexual gratification. It was call the Deer Exercises by the Taoist of China. The Aswini Mudra (the horse gesture) by the Yogis of India.

      Weakening of the pelvic muscles can be attributive to pregnancy, childbirth, obesity, and poor posture. Surgery can also damage the nerves controlling the urinary track or weaken the muscles, thus causing involuntary contractions and making it harder to control the bladder. Some medication such as sedatives, narcotics, and diuretics can have a detrimental effect in you controlling your urinary system. Chronic illness or conditions like multiple sclerosis, diabetes, stroke, and Parkinson disease can cause you to suffer from an overactive bladder.

      For women, the first step in the Kegel Exercise is to determine which muscle that needs to be exercised. For women you can tell which muscles to use by squeezing the muscles in your genital area by pretending that you are trying to stop the flow of urine. This is the pubococcygeal muscle. Get a feeling where this muscle is and how it feels when it is being exercised.

      For men, the Kegel exercise is done by contracting the anal sphincter instead of the urinary sphincter as in the woman’s exercise. This is because the pubococcygeal muscle begins around the anus and travels to the urinary sphincter muscle.

      Next you want to tighten these muscles and hold them for about four seconds and then relax. You want to repeat this process for about 10 or 20 times. Between each contraction of the muscles you want to make sure that you allow the muscles to relax completely. After you get the hang of it you will be able to contract the muscle for up to 10 seconds and then completely relax for 10 seconds.

      Next you want to make sure that you do the Kegel exercises 10 times a day. This is important because if you do fewer than this number you will be lowering the effectiveness of the exercises. Do not become sloppy with the exercise and contract the rectum, your stomach muscles, and thigh muscles. You must exercise the pubococcygeal muscle only.

      The great thing about Kegel exercises is that you can do them anywhere and no one will even know you are doing them if you are doing the exercise correctly. For example, you can do them at work, in your car, while you are washing dishes or even watching television. It doesn’t matter where you do them as long as you do them every day.

      You don’t want to do these exercises while you are urinating. If you feel you are not exercising the pubococcygeal muscle correctly then women may stop the flow during urination just long enough to get a feel for the muscle again as you did in step one. If the Kegel exercise is performed during urination it could lead to urinary tract infection.

      After childbirth a woman can use the Kegel exercise to return to her pre-pregnancy strength and muscle tone. Regular Kegel exercise can also increase sexual pleasure for the woman and their partners.

      For men the Kegel exercise can be used to allow them to achieve orgasm with ejaculation and perhaps each multiple orgasms during sex.

      What is it?
      Spinal cord injury (SCI) occurs when the spinal cord is damaged in a way that results in some loss of sensation and motor control. The spinal cord is a thick length of nerve tissue that extends from the base of the brain, down the back, through the spinal column. The spinal column is made up of bones called vertebrae that protect the spinal cord. The spinal cord is made up of motor and sensory nerve cells called neurons. The motor nerves are grouped together and transmit motor commands from the brain to the muscles and initiate movement. The sensory nerves are also grouped together. They carry information about sensations, such as pain and temperature, to the brain. The spinal cord is divided into four areas: cervical (neck), thoracic (chest), lumbar (lower back), and sacral (tailbone). Each area is referred to by its first letter (C, T, L, or S) and the vertebrae within each area of the spine are numbered as follows:

      C1 to C8: Cervical vertebrae
      T1 to T12: Thoracic vertebrae
      L1 to L5: Lumbar vertebrae
      S1 to S5: Sacral vertebrae
      The nerves enter and exit the spinal cord through the small openings between each vertebra. The nerves that enter through the tailbone (coccyx) are called coccygeal nerves. Spinal cord injuries occur most often in the areas of C5 to C7, and T10 to L2, where the spine is most flexible. When injured, each spinal area has distinct symptoms that help doctors pinpoint the nerves that are damaged.

      Who gets it?
      Approximately 10,000 people injure their spinal cord in the United States each year. Spinal cord injuries can happen to anyone, at any age. However, men between the ages of 19 and 26 are more likely to have a spinal cord injury due to an accident or some act of violence.

      What causes it?
      Damage to the spinal cord is usually caused by one of five different types of injuries. Concussion of the spinal cord occurs when a sudden, violent jolt injures the tissues around the cord. This injury is usually temporary and goes away with in a few hours. A spinal contusion (bruise) causes bleeding to occur in the spinal column. The pressure the bleeding puts on the spinal cord can kill neurons. Spinal compression occurs when an object, for example, a tumor, puts pressure on the spinal cord. When the spinal cord becomes torn by some type of injury, the neurons are also damaged. Or, injury occurs when the spinal cord is completely cut. Fifty percent of all spinal cord injuries occur in a motor vehicle accident. Twenty percent occur from a fall, 15% from some act of violence, and 14% from a sports-related accident. The accidents that cause many spinal cord injuries are related to drug or alcohol abuse. Other causes of spinal cord injury include infection or disease, such as cysts on the spinal cord, multiple sclerosis, or cervical spondylosis (degeneration of the disks and vertebrae in the neck).

      What are the symptoms?
      Damage to the spinal cord interrupts the signals from the sensory and motor nerves, resulting in varying degrees of paralysis and loss of sensation. Symptoms depend upon the severity and location of the injury. A completely severed spinal cord causes paralysis and loss of sensation below the severed section. Patients with the cord partially severed may have some function below the injury. Damage to the front portion of the cord causes paralysis and loss of the ability to feel pain and changes in temperature. Damage to the center of the cord may paralyze the arms, but not the legs. Damage to the right or left half of the spinal cord causes paralysis on the side of the injury, loss of pain and temperature sensation on the opposite side of the injury, and loss of the ability to sense position. Injuries located in vertebrae C1 to C5 may cause paralysis of the muscles used for breathing and all arm and leg muscles. Theses types of injuries usually result in death. Damage above the T1 vertebra affects the arms and the legs. Injuries below the T1 vertebra affect the legs and trunk below the injury, but usually do not affect the arms and hands. Paralysis of the legs is called paraplegia. Paralysis of the arms and legs is called quadriplegia. Complications of spinal cord injuries include deep vein thrombosis, in which lack of normal blood flow to the paralyzed area causes blood to pool in the deep veins and form clots; pressure ulcers of the skin from staying in one position for long periods of time; joint deformity caused by the constant contraction of the muscle (contracture); abnormal deposits of bone in muscles and tendons, called heterotopic ossification; and urinary infection and hardened stool in the large intestine and rectum (impaction) from the loss of bladder and bowel control.     My husband grew up in a thrid world country.
    His father and four uncles all died with similar symptoms.
    One day they were out in their gardens, and they fell.
    After that, they slowly began to lose functioning ability.
    They lost ability to walk, feed themselves, and spent the rest of their lives in bed.

    They did not have access to doctors to assess what they problem was.

    I am worried that it may be a hereditary disease since it happened to all five men. Do these symptoms sound like any disease that you know of? I am trying to research any disease that it could possibly be.

      It could be a very agressive form of multiple sclerosis or it could be amyotropic lateral sclerosis(lou gehrigs disease). It could be alot of things, but als affects men more than women, and ms affects women more. In both of those, victims just lose their ability to function and become floppy. Huntington’s Chorea is another thought, but with that you have jerky movements and can’t control your body, but you still move your arms and legs. You might want to talk to your husband’s doctor and tell him this and he could maybe order some tests to see if your husband carries any of these diseases. All can run in families, and some neurological diseases can be found through genetic testing. If you don’t have kids, you might want to get the genetic testing first and find out your kids risk. For all you know, though, it could have just been something in the environment, like lead or mercury that damaged their brains, because third world countries don’t have the same epa standards we do. Either way, it’s a good idea to get it checked out and be prepared!

      I’m taking for granted that you’re using the term dementia accurately — that is, a steady decline in cognition and function…. as opposed to delirium, which would have a more sudden onset and fluctuating course, or psychiatric disorders, such as psychosis, for which associated behaviors are sometimes described as ‘demented’ in lay terms.

      HIV/AIDS-related dementia would be the most common in that age group.

      This is a case that would really depend on the particular fellow’s history. Was he a boxer? Then pugilistic dementia would be most likely. Is there a history of brain injury (e.g., car accident)? There could be underlying gliosis / encephalomalacia (put simply, loss of useful brain tissue) as a result. Is there a history of excessive alcohol or drug use?

      Is the dementia characterized by loss of inhibitions (bad behavior)? Fronto-temporal dementia is another pattern seen in younger patients.

      Other possibilities could include a movement disorder such as Huntington’s disease (is there a family history?), or presumed autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis or lupus.

      Consultation with a neurologist, geriatrician, or geriatric psychiatrist would be avenues worth pursuing. His particular history and symptoms will guide which consultants would be most helpful here. Have a heart-to-heart with your primary care doctor.

Studies have shown that during normal, at-rest breathing, we don’t use anywhere near our lung capacity; for the most part, we just use the air sacs at the bottom of the lungs. If the air sacs, called alveoli, don’t get fresh air, they partially collapse and the lungs stiffen a bit. As a result, it’s believed, our brain prompts the body to either sigh or take a yawn to get more air into the lungs.

      There are many parts of the body that are in action when you yawn. First, your mouth opens and jaw drops, allowing as much air to be taken in as possible. When you inhale, the air taken in is filling your lungs. Your abdominal muscles flex and your diaphragm is pushed down. The air you breath in expands the lungs to capacity and then some of the air is blown back out.

      While the dictionary tells us that yawning is caused by being fatigued, drowsy or bored, scientists are discovering that there is more to yawning than what most people think. Not much is known about why we yawn or if it serves any useful function and very little research has been done on the subject. However, there are several theories about why we yawn.

      Here are the three most common theories:
      •The Physiological Theory — Our bodies induce yawning to drawn in more oxygen or remove a build-up of carbon dioxide. This theory helps explain why we yawn in groups. Larger groups produce more carbon dioxide, which means our bodies would act to draw in more oxygen and get rid of the excess carbon dioxide. However, if our bodies make us yawn to drawn in needed oxygen, wouldn’t we yawn during exercise? Robert Provine, a psychologist at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and a leading expert on yawning, has tested this theory. Giving people additional oxygen didn’t decrease yawning and decreasing the amount of carbon dioxide in a subject’s environment also didn’t prevent yawning.
      •The Evolution Theory — Some think that yawning is something that began with our ancestors, who used yawning to show their teeth and intimidate others. An offshoot of this theory is the idea that yawning developed from early man as a signal for us to change activities.
      •The Boredom Theory — In the dictionary, yawning is said to be caused by boredom, fatigue or drowsiness. Although we do tend to yawn when bored or tired, this theory doesn’t explain why Olympic athletes yawn right before they compete in their event. It’s doubtful that they are bored with the world watching them.
      The simple truth is that even though humans have been yawning for possibly as long as they have existed, we have no clue as to why we do it. Maybe it serves some healthful purpose. It does cause us to draw in more air and our hearts to race faster than normal, but so does exercise. There’s still much we don’t understand about our own brains, so maybe yawning is triggered by some area of the brain we have yet to discover. We do know that yawning is not limited to man. Cats, dogs, even fish yawn, which leads us back to the idea that yawning is some form of communication.

    I am 18 years old and almost every branch of the military said they couldn’t accept me because of my ms. I may have this disease but i am absolutely fine! I have no effects from it, I am NOT disabled. So why not accept me?

      Hi Elizabeth! I have MS also.The truth is that while you are well now, you might be that way tomorrow, next week, next month or next year. Even minor problems with MS could turn out to be total deficits if you are in any branch of the service. The military knows that your disease is highly unpredictable, and at a moments notice, take a turn a turn for the worse. As a consequence, they realize that investing in educating and training you is not in the country’s best interest.

      How do they know this? Plenty of young men and woman who were in the military developed MS. The Veterans Administration already spends a bundle on them in terms of medications, home modifications, converting cars to special needs vehicles, in-home health care, nursing, and the list goes on and on. While you may never become disabled, the military knows that odds are very, very good that you are going to have flare-ups of symptoms that could render you incapable of executing your duties.

    What would cause my left hand to have tremors?
    I have had aching in my hands before, when I did a lot of heavy lifting at work. But I am not working now. I haven’t been to the gym in over a week, so it’s not like I have been over working it. (no, I’m not a man doing something naughty). It just starting shaking violently for no reason.

      There are a variety of possibilities, depending on any other associated symptoms you might have had. If your left hand ached or felt stiff or a little odd, the problem is more likely to originate in the forearm or hand, and this type of tremor is a normal response to some temporary condition. Problems that originate in an isolated area are usually caused by nerve or muscle overuse or nerve entrapment. A common cause is sleeping with the wrist bent, along with putting the weight of your body on your wrist.

      If there was no aching, stiffness, or odd sensations, its not very easy to isolate the cause without neurological testing, and the tremor is more likely to be caused by an abnormal condition. Severe tremor in a single extremity can be caused by an imbalance in certain neurotransmitters or certain types of hormones, or abnormalities in neurons or the brain. A common cause of abnormal tremors that cause violent shaking is multiple sclerosis.

    I got a spinal tap for a migraine a month ago, and my back still hurts. Is this normal?
    Were the doctor put the needle in my spine the bone and around the bone feels like it is brussed. This didnt start feeling like this untill I got a spinal tap a month ago. The reason for the spinal tap was for a migrane headache, just wanted to know if this was normal?

    Help with my mother and Multiple Sclerosis and the heat?
    My mom with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is having difficulty sitting upright. At times she’ll lean far to the right or far to the left, and for the first time forward to where her chin touched her knee. However, this has only occurred in the extreme heat, but she is not even outside, and is in an air conditioned house. She is currently not on any MS medication (not sure if that is important or not).
    Is there anything that we can do about this problem?

      Many times MS is a misdiagnosis for many other problems that cause similar symptoms. The first thing to look for is ASPARTAME (artificial sugar consumption). Eliminate this from her diet completely. Any diet drinks or food need to be thrown in the trash.

      The next thing is to look at “heavy metal” toxicity. If she has had typical dental work, especially root canals, vaccinations of any kind, eats sushi or especially large ocean fish, etc., she needs to get rid of those metals out of her body. Parasites can create many of the problems the look like MS.

      Something is causing this problem that is not a natural thing. Doctors will only treat the symptoms with medication and those medications are damaging her body.

      EDIT: There are other ways to deal with MS other than some medications. I made some suggestions to a man that was fed up with the medical system approach and is now OFF ALL MEDICATIONS, lost his tremors, out of the wheel chair, and progressively getting better. In fact, he is riding his bike 100 miles per week and traveling on an airplane. ALL WITHOUT DRUGS. He did his own independent research and the results are what they are. He claims that this saved him over $37,000 so far and his quality of life is something that he treasures now.

      My older sister wanted to be an English teacher. She started to go to college but had to drop out and get a job to support her husband while he went to school full time. He was on a scholarship for engineering and his education was apparently more important than hers.

      She fell into a depression and after meeting a man who treated her better, she left him and married guy #2.

      When she was pregnant with his child, she had severe complications due to the diabetes she had since she was 5 years old. The baby wasn’t expected because her doctor told her she was sterile and would never have children.

      Her second husband left her. Around this time, she was very sick. She was too sick to work and had to get social security disability insurance from the government.

      The government told her she wasn’t sick enough. Even though she was suffering from nerve damage in her feet, 60% blindness in her eyes, and severe depression… she apparently wasn’t sick enough.

      Four years after she first applied, the government decided they had made a mistake and she was too sick to work. So when she was 24, she finally got government assistance along with free medical care.

      Too bad the government doesn’t tell you that it’s the worst medical care you can imagine and the doctors don’t care about the health of their patients.

      My sister had been experiencing odd symptoms and she was in excruciating pain all the time. One doctor labeled her as a hypochondriac and from then on, she couldn’t get a diagnosis because all the other doctors thought it was all in her head. Well… in a way it was.

      Six years after the symptoms first showed up, when she was 27, she was finally diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis when the pain finally brought her into the ER. In January 2009, she had 30 lesions on her brain. After six years with untreated M.S., the damage was permanent and getting worse. All because she was treated like scum, like useless garbage because she was on the government’s SSDI. She did not receive proper care because those doctors don’t want SSDI patients.

      She killed herself the next month. She couldn’t take the pain. It was bad enough to where she left her 6 year old autistic daughter behind. A little girl who didn’t even have a father because he was in jail for the next ten years.

      The government failed her and it failed the rest of us. Is that a good enough reason?
