Arthritis is a joint disorder featuring inflammation. A joint is an area of the body where two bones meet. A joint functions to allow movement of the body parts it connects. Arthritis literally means inflammation of one or more joints. Arthritis is frequently accompanied by joint pain. Joint pain is referred to as arthralgia.

Arthritis is classified as one of the rheumatic diseases. These are conditions that are different individual illnesses, with differing features, treatments, complications, and prognosis. They are similar in that they have a tendency to affect the joints, muscles, ligaments, cartilage, and tendons, and many have the potential to affect internal body areas as well. There are many forms of arthritis (over 100 have been described so far, and the number is growing). The forms range from those related to wear and tear of cartilage (such as osteoarthritis) to those associated with inflammation as a result of an overactive immune system (such as rheumatoid arthritis). Together, the many forms of arthritis make up the most common chronic illness in the United States.

Arthritis sufferers include men and women, children and adults. Approximately 350 million people worldwide have arthritis. Over 40 million people in the United States are affected by arthritis, including over a quarter million children! More than half of those with arthritis are under 65 years of age. Nearly 60% of Americans with arthritis are women.

Arthritis Causes

The causes of arthritis depend on the form of arthritis. Causes include injury (leading to degenerative arthritis), abnormal metabolism (such as gout and pseudogout), inheritance (such as in osteoarthritis), infections (such as in the arthritis of Lyme disease), and an overactive immune system (such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus). Treatment programs, when possible, are often directed toward the precise cause of the arthritis. More than 21 million Americans have osteoarthritis. Approximately 2.1 million Americans suffer from rheumatoid arthritis.

Arthritis Symptoms

Symptoms of arthritis include pain and limited function of joints. Inflammation of the joints from arthritis is characterized by joint stiffness, swelling, redness, and warmth. Tenderness of the inflamed joint can be present. Loss of range of motion and deformity can result. Certain forms of arthritis can also be associated with pain and inflammation of tendons surrounding joints.

Some forms of arthritis are more of an annoyance than a serious medical problem. However, millions of people suffer daily with pain and disability from arthritis or its complications. Moreover, many of the forms of arthritis, because they are rheumatic diseases, can cause symptoms affecting various organs of the body that do not directly involve the joints. Therefore, symptoms in some patients with certain forms of arthritis can also include fever, gland swelling, weight loss, fatigue, feeling unwell, and even symptoms from abnormalities of organs such as the lungs, heart, or kidneys.

Does anyone has an experience with plaquenil? or some one knows a natural way to cure lupus? I am currently taking oil fish, cellfood and recovery( for joint pain) and multi-vitamins.

Help with Endometriosis! What would happen if I stop taking my birth control for a while…?
I can’t seem to find the right birth control option to help with my Endometriosis, I have horrible pain no matter which one I’m on, and I’ve been on at least a dozen, and all of them make me feel and act crazy. So I am wondering if anyone knows what would happen if I just stopped, or if someone can offer suggestions for a birth control that can help with the pain, not make me a psychopath, but does not stop my period from happening. Help!

I was diagnosed with Endo when I was 18 although I’ve had symptoms since I was 13 or so. I’ve done a redic amount of digging for answers regarding pain management since then because it seems like I’m in constant pain.

I just recently found a book which stated evidence that Endo was not necessarily a hormonal disorder but an autoimmune disorder. I was always told Endo was genetic and ran in families but no one I was related to had it, however both my mom and my aunt have Lupus and my mom also had rheumatoid arthritis so it made much more sense to me!

Evidence suggests that women with endo are more susceptible to allergies or sensitivities and often have recurrent infections at a higher rate than non-endo patients. When your immune system overreacts to an allergen it creates the perfect little niche for yeast bacteria or Candida albicans to sneak into the system. You may often get vaginal yeast infections or throat or ear infections. You may have no symptoms at all as the yeast can live very happily in low concentrations throughout the body. You might have symptoms like pain that you don’t associate with a yeast infection!

Here’s where it gets interesting! Candida albicans or yeast has been shown to bind with estrogen. So when your immune system tries to attack the yeast not only is it attacking the yeast, it’s attacking the estrogen as well making you effectively allergic to your own estrogen. Since adhesions often produce their own estrogen the yeast binds and the immune systems attacks the adhesions creating pain, inflammation and scar tissue almost in the same way Crohn’s disease create scar tissue in the bowel etc.

This yeast research might explain why some women with large multiple adhesions seem to have no pain and others with minimal adhesions seem to have chronic pain. The pain isn’t caused by the adhesions themselves but rather the immune system’s reaction to the yeast present.

I would recommend that you check into allergy testing and ask for an allergy test to yeast or candida albicans yourself. There is also an anti-yeast diet which alot of women have had great success with in terms of pain relief. One doctor after hearing of the yeast link started to prescribe antifungals which seemed to have little effect, after putting patients on trial anti-yeast diets he was repeatedly told by patients he was a genius as they were finally free of pain. The anti-yeast diet consists of no yeast products (breads, pizza crusts, bagels, anything which contains yeast) and no sugars of any kind (honeys, syrups, artificial sweetners etc.). Which are often the things Endo sufferers crave most. One doctor remarked that his patient after being on the diet for a year decided to treat herself to the sugary pastry she had loved so much before when she had yeast problems. She found she no longer even liked the pastry and the doctor said there has been some evidence that the yeast bacteria might even manipulate the body’s cravings to create a more favorable environment for itself.

      Hope this helps!

ADD – Remember that hysterecomies, unless all the adhesions are removed (some of which are actually microscopic) would be useless since adhesions create their own estrogen. Some women even find adhesion growth years after hysterectomy. The reason many doctors push hysterectomies is the remove the presence of estrogens which seem to spur the condition. If your doctor supplements estrogen directly afterwards for fear of bone loss it completely defeats the point.

You may have an easier time with a progesterone only birth control pill or “mini-pill” as they’re called. They also seem to have less side effects.
