Gout stands out as a really painful form of arthritis that is really hard to bear. Most people are going to need painkillers in order to handle the pain and gout attacks can appear at any point in time, without warning. The good news is that we can control the symptoms and even eliminate them completely. All that is really needed is a modification to our diet. To put it simple, we need to use what was labeled by nutritionists as a uric acid diet.
Why a Uric Acid Diet?
Gout attacks will appear because of high quantities of uric acid that is noticed inside our bloodstream. The good news is that uric acid levels can be controlled and this would also have a great impact on our condition and even on our general health. Exercising is also recommended at all times but the diet is actually a necessity of the gout patient. There is no need to go through constant pain when it can be avoided easily. Just a few changes are required and they can make a huge difference in the life of anyone that has to deal with this form of arthritis.
What is the Uric Acid Diet?
We can describe the uric acid as a special diet for gout patients that include mostly low purine foods or foods that have no purines. The purines are responsible for the build of uric acid. If we manage to keep purine intake levels really low the problems are going to be mostly eliminated.
You will also hear the term “low uric acid foods”. Do not be tempted to believe that this is a talk about foods that contain uric acid. There is no such thing. The truth is that these are just foods that are to be used in a low uric acid diet, which is basically the low purine diet.
What you have to do is make a list of all the foods that are high in purines. These are the foods that you are going to have to avoid at all costs. Then you need to make a list of all foods that have low purine levels. These are foods that you should eat and that are generally safe for your body. This does not mean that you should eat only these. A third list will include foods that do not contain purines. If you only consume foods with no or low purine levels you will quickly notice that gout pain is going to disappear and the attacks are not going to appear again.
The bottom line is that a uric acid diet can do wonders but it is your responsibility to make sure that you can stick to it. It can be really hard in the beginning, especially if you are used to eating a lot of red meat. However, as soon as you start to notice all the benefits that are associated, everything will become much easier and you will definitely love the fact that you won't have to go through a gout attack again.
